What is burnt wood? Why choose burnt wood? 

Shou sugi ban is a Japanese technique for charring wood to increase its durability and resistance to fire, insects and decay. The process involves burning the surface of the wood with a torch or open flame until it turns black, then brushing the charred surface to reveal the natural grain of the wood beneath. What oil should be applied to burnt wood? 

To fix the carbon in burnt wood, you can opt to apply Galtane Hardening Oil. It has excellent impregnability and a clean feel. It is colourless and will revive the black colour of the burnt wood.

What's the alternative to black cladding without burning the wood? 

The alternative is to oil the wood with a black impregnating oil, preferably one that is environmentally friendly, such as Tulló's black "Valdakaya" stain.

What types of wood are suitable for black wood cladding?  

Tulló Black "Valdakaya" stain can be applied to different types of pine. Ideally, the wood should be untreated, with or without planing. Tulló Black "Valdakaya" can also be easily applied to pallet wood, reclaimed wood or recycled wood: a more environmentally-friendly choice.

What type of natural, non-toxic woodstain should I choose? 

Tulló Woodstain is a concentrated plant-based linseed oil product with high UV protection.

Galtane's Tulló Stain promotes a genuine sustainable development policy that is consistent with all Galtane products. It is made from dry extracts of plant (linseed oil) and mineral origin, and chosen for its very low impact on the environment, bees, insects and health. It contains no biocide, preservatives, isocyanates, synthetic acrylic copolymers, solvents or anti-fungal additives. VOC content: < 0.2 g/litre! 

You can work in full sunlight without any danger to bees: there will be no unpleasant fumes.

To protect health and the environment, we have also chosen not to use any surface biocide. This would probably result in small black dots appearing on the surface of the stain. 

This is not harmful. Restore a clean surface by cleaning with Galtane All Purpose Cleaner (ref. 2010). 

Why stain or oil wood?

With a Tulló Galtane woodstain, you oil the wood. The wood absorbs the oil and the oil does not form film-forming layers. As a result, this protection will not flake off. With an oil stain, maintenance is easy. What's more, with a Galtane Tulló stain, you'll retain a pleasant wood feel and the wood grain will still be visible. Tulló de Galtane woodstain protects against photodegradation and weathering of outdoor wood. It prevents the lignin on the surface of the wood from degrading, leading to greying, cracking and warping. Galtane woodstains are impregnations and the colours can be mixed together.

How do I stain black wooden cladding? 

The wood should be dry and have a moisture content of less than 14%. Apply 2 thin coats, 24 hours apart, at 20°C and 60% humidity.   If conditions are cooler or more humid, drying time will increase. 

After the first coat, you may notice a difference in gloss between "spring wood" and "summer wood".
